LUMOTHS LITERALLY

The word LUMOTHS comes from 'Luna Moths', a rare species of silkmoth with bright and delicate wings. These moths have a unique story; they always fly towards the light, even in the darkest night. They never lose their way, moving forward with confidence in the direction from which the light comes. As unique totem animals in a symbolic and spiritual sense, Luna Moths represent heightened awareness, new beginnings, and spiritual transformation.

HOW DID IT ALL START IN 2008?

"When I took my first fabric pattern design classes at my second university from a highly esteemed and well-known, valuable professor in Turkish academia, who was also a very tough teacher—especially when it came to grades and passing students from her class… you truly had to earn that passing grade. However, it was impossible not to admire the wonderful woman and wealth of knowledge behind that sternness… and I was a great admirer.


During a final where, so to speak, everyone’s grades were cut and people received low marks, she was giving her criticisms to everyone. After she meticulously and sternly conveyed her feedback on students' shortcomings and advice on how to improve themselves, it was my turn. I waited for her comments and my grade with a mixture of great excitement and tension inside me. After our professor looked at my work for a long time, she said, "A natural talent," pushed my work aside, and made no other comment. I had received AA on my final projects, and I was the only student in the class to get that grade.
At that moment, I decided I would draw my own patterns. I remember saying this should be my job. And the seeds of LUMOTHS began to be sown on that day in 2008... and as you can see in these old photos, I had started the drawings for the first pattern of my first collection, 'The Ceremony of Philosophers'—Horses & Snakes—in 2015. Although a bit delayed, I created LUMOTHS in 2021. And that’s how the birth story of my brand began.”


Funda Gülay Cengiz founded the LUMOTHS brand, officially established in 2021, as a slow fashion brand within a truly sustainable design philosophy and ethical approach. Since its launch, she has brought the LUMOTHS brand, designed and produced in Turkey, to life as a pioneering female entrepreneur brand that adds a high aesthetic perception and a new breath to its sector in Turkey, expanding from Turkey to the world. It is the first pioneering brand in Turkey to present & adopt animal figures as main characters within a concept in this way, adding an innovative and special expression to wearable art with its unique storytelling and traditional charcoal imaginary hand-drawn style.

DESIGN PROCESS

CREATING A COLLECTION & INSPIRATION

I love an intuitive progression in the creative process. There is an infinite amount of information around me or on our planet that affects me or could affect me, and a whole collection of moments that I see from a different perspective. I can derive countless stories from a book I read, from different cultures or cities I have visited and experienced, or even from an unexpected moment or feeling that occurs in the ordinary flow of life's dynamics. What I do has never been about trendy themes or topics brought by transient influences. I create these unique stories and collections with details belonging to me and my world, using my own aesthetic expression and style. Each collection is like a personal, emotional, and visual reflection of the inspirations that affect me at a certain period. I inspire with a creative & unique perspective; drawing inspiration from nature, art, design, cultural heritage, and history. My art of creating personal expression; timeless, deep stories and signature drawings...

TRADITIONAL-REALIST DRAWING WITH IMAGERY

Each design that emerges, starting from the point of my inspiration, first manifests in my mind, then pours into my hands. I transfer the drawings from my imagination onto a blank paper using the traditional charcoal technique as imaginative drawings. All the main characters, with the poses that come to life in my imagination, as if frozen in time, are drawn from scratch from my imagination. This is precisely why my drawing process takes approximately two months. Every detail is meticulously thought out, and every image, springing from my imagination, takes its place on the paper with careful, clean craftsmanship.
Realistic yet abstract narratives symbolize the inherent creativity of the LUMOTHS world. Stories whisper to you not only through text or sentences but also through visual imagery.

Each LUMOTHS pattern is hand-drawn by me. The drawings are transferred to a digital medium using a special technique, without losing the fine details, and are drawn twice, each stage meticulously executed with a special technique.

HANDICRAFT, CAREFUL PRODUCTION

Each LUMOTHS art scarf is a reflection of the value placed on craftsmanship. The seams on the edges are carefully hand-sewn by local artisans. This traditional technique not only enhances the elegance and flow of the silk,
